Description

Tanyers is a cottage that was formerly the British School, built for the nonconformist community. It features inscribed imposts that read 'W WALTERS', 'BUILDER 1809'. The building is constructed of gault brick and has a hipped slated roof. It is a single storey structure. The west elevation includes a wide segmental arched panel with stone imposts, a boarded door in a round-headed brick arch to the right, and two pivot-hung windows set back in segmental brick arches. On the south elevation, there are two shuttered windows with original patterned glazing bars. The building is historically significant as Samuel Dodkin, a dissenter who died in 1808, left an endowment for a school.
