Description
Milton Hall is a small country house built around 1772 for Reverend Dr. Knight, who was a Canon of Ely. The building is constructed of gault brick with stone dressings and features low-pitched hipped slate roofs. It has a symmetrical layout with a central three-storey block consisting of three bays, flanked by two-storey single bay wings that are raised over a basement with a deep plinth. There is also a two-storey kitchen wing located to the north-east. The semi-circular rear elevation of the central block is reflected in the floor plans of the first and second floors.
The main elevation includes three second-floor, four-paned sash windows and a central six-paned recessed hung sash window, all set in cambered gauged brick arches. The first and ground floors have similar windows with eight- and twelve-panes. A Tuscan porch, approached by stone steps that were originally semi-circular in plan, features a round-arched brick doorway with a patterned fanlight and a wide six-panelled door. The rear of the kitchen wing has some 18th-century mullioned and transomed windows with leaded lights.
Inside, there is a geometric planned open string staircase with square balusters and a mahogany handrail, illuminated by an oval stair light with cast iron glazing bars. The original panelled mahogany and painted doors are present, along with some 19th-century attic doors. The ground floor room in the south-west wing features a dentil cornice with composite pilasters and marks for two missing columns in the panelled entablature. The kitchen contains a sealed cooking hearth and stop-chamfered ceiling beams, which are also found in the servants' hall and scullery. There is a servants' stair and a brick vaulted basement. Some alterations were made to the north-east wing and kitchen wing around 1955.
