Description
Old Shardelowes is a house that dates from the 15th century and the late 16th or early 17th century, with a kitchen wing added at the rear in the 17th century. It features a timber frame that is plaster rendered, topped with steeply pitched plain tiled roofs. The ridge stack is made of narrow gault brick from the 17th century and is located at the junction of the two ranges. The building has a hall and crosswing layout, with the hall range being two storeys high and having two small pane casements on the first floor. There is a doorway in its original location that leads to a cross-passage. The crosswing has two 20th-century casements.
Inside, the hall was originally open to the roof, but a floor and stack were likely inserted around 1600. Some sooted rafters from the earlier roof remain near the stack. The current hall roof features substantial side purlin construction. Mortices for a wall between the hall and service room, which is part of the cross-passage, can be seen in one beam. The joists in the service bay are unmoulded and laid flat. The inglenook hearth in the hall has likely been restored. The parlour crosswing was either added or rebuilt in the late 16th century, featuring a roof with straight wind bracing to the clasped side purlins and a closed truss between the two bays. The kitchen wing, probably added in the 17th century, includes a red brick inglenook hearth with openings for spice and salt cupboards.
