Description
Chequers is a house that was formerly an inn, dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century. It features a timber-framed structure with plastering and applied timber decoration, topped by a half hipped plain tile roof. The building has a plastered plinth and a stack on the left side. It stands two storeys high with a cellar and follows a three-unit, lobby entry plan. There is a modern gabled extension on the right side and an open porch at the angle, which includes a four-panelled entrance door. The house has three casement windows on the first floor and two on the ground floor, all of which are from the 20th century. Inside, there is a chamfered axial beam with leaf stops and exposed timber framing, along with two original hearths made of brick and clunch; the stack was reduced in the 20th century to the first floor.
