Description

This is a late 17th or early 18th century cottage located in Horse and Gate Street, Fen Drayton. It is timber-framed with pine, and the frame is plastered with applied timber frame decoration. The structure incorporates early 18th century brick and gault brick, and is roofed with thatch. The original three-unit plan has been extended to the east, with the original lobby entry blocked and the main entrance now in the rear elevation. There are three ground floor windows, each with three- or two-lights, and one dormer window with a horizontal sliding sash. The brick gable features a tumbled parapet and a red brick ridge stack. The interior reveals exposed pine floor joists with stop-chamfered joists and run-out stops, along with a pine roof with a ridge piece. Straight braces are visible on the timber frame. Originally the Horse and Gate Inn, the building's details were documented by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments for England in 1950.
