Description
The Parish Church of St John the Baptist is a parish church that dates back to 1530 but was almost entirely rebuilt between 1852 and 1854, with the west tower completed in 1848. The west door is a surviving feature from the 16th century. The church is constructed using re-used ashlar limestone and fieldstones arranged in a chequer pattern, topped with a plain tile roof that has patterned ridge tiles.
On the north elevation, there are parapets on both the nave and chancel, which include a continuous moulded plinth band. The vestry and north porch are gabled and also feature parapets. The church has three-stage buttresses at the angles of the chancel and three-light windows in the nave, which are set in two-centred arches. The tower consists of three stages, topped with an embattled parapet, and includes angle gargoyles and five-stage buttresses.
The church is currently owned by The Society for the Care of Friendless Churches and underwent restoration in 1983.
