Description
Phytyles is a row of four cottages that has been converted into a single cottage. It dates from the late 15th century or early 16th century, with additions and alterations made in the late 17th century or early 18th century. The building is timber-framed and plastered, featuring a thatched roof and tiled dormer windows. There are two square red brick ridge stacks. The cottage has one storey and an attic, with an original open hall consisting of two bays, possibly with floored end bays that have been altered to create four cottages, each containing two ground floor and two first floor rooms. It has five early three-light casement windows with leaded lights, along with six dormer windows. Inside, some partitions have been removed in the northern rooms, revealing original hearths and exposed floor frames. The smoke blackened collar rafter roof is covered by later roofs.
