Description

Church Farmhouse is a house dating from the 15th century, featuring an open hall and a crosswing, with alterations and additions made in the 17th century. It is timber framed, rendered, and has long straw thatched roofs that are hipped to the right. A 17th-century stack made of narrow gault bricks with diagonally set grouped shafts is present, along with a later stack at the gable end facing the road. The original open hall, which had a cross passage, was converted to a lobby entry in the 17th century when the stack was inserted. The building has two storeys and an attic, with one casement window from the 19th to 20th century on each storey of both the hall and the crosswing.

Inside, there are abutting inglenook hearths, one in the kitchen that has been largely rebuilt, and another in the former open hall featuring soft red brick jambs and narrow gault brick in the stack. A floor was inserted in the hall during the 17th century, with narrow joists laid on edge. The wall between the hall and the crosswing has six painted panels between the studs, designed to imitate square moulded panelling from the early 17th century, although these panels are now concealed. There are two doorways that may have been original service doorways leading to the crosswing. The dog leg staircase features a balustrade from around 1660 with flat section balusters and a square newel topped with a faceted ball finial. A small closet on the first floor still has coat and hat pegs that may date back to the late 17th century. The crosswing has a clasped side purlin roof with curved wind bracing, while the roof over the former open hall has been rebuilt but retains a pair of sooted rafters from the original structure.
