Description
The Gables is a medieval hall featuring two cross-wings, constructed over three building periods, with an early 19th-century rear extension and later single-storey extensions to the east of the street facade. The building stands two storeys high and is timber-framed, covered in 19th-century gault brick. It has steeply pitched plain tile gable roofs, a tall ridge stack, and an end stack at the rear of the east cross-wing. The street facade showcases pierced and shaped barge boards with finials, stone hood moulds over 2-light casement windows that have glazing bars, chamfered reveals, and stone sills. There is also a canted 4-light bay window with a plain tile roof on the hall.
Inside, the exposed timber framing suggests that the east wing predates the 15th-century hall and may date back to the early 14th century, while the west cross-wing is from the late 16th century. The interior features three ingle nook hearths.
