Description
This building is a former workshop, specifically the soll (rag sorting house) for the Wansford Paper Mill, located approximately 26 metres west of Stibbington House. It likely dates from the early 19th century, with later alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The structure is built from coursed limestone rubble with freestone dressings and features a low pitched hipped roof covered in Collyweston stone slates.
The building is two storeys tall, with the entrance facing south. To the right of the entrance is a glazed door, and to the left is a casement window. On the first floor, there are two large windows with small panes, each topped with segmental brick arches. The soll may have survived a fire that occurred in the mill in 1805. It is depicted in a bill head from around 1830, showing a double hipped roof. The mill was closed due to an explosion in 1855, and the mill buildings were ultimately demolished in 1867. The mill was known for producing newspaper from bleached rags for the London Times and Stamford Mercury.
