Description

The Grange is a mid-18th century house with 19th century additions located on the north side of Somersham High Street. It is constructed of red brick and features a plain tiled roof with tumbled parapet gable ends and end stacks. The building is two stories tall with attics and includes three gable dormers fitted with later casement windows. The front is symmetrical with a five-window range of 19th century hung sashes that have slender glazing bars set in gauged brick arches. Four of these windows are adorned with 19th century pelmets featuring a geometrical pattern. The ground floor mirrors this with four similar windows and pelmets. The central doorway boasts an early 19th century doorcase with reeded pilasters, a plain entablature, and a flat doorhood. The six-panelled door is topped by a semi-circular headed fanlight with glazing bars and has panelled reveals. To the left, there is an early 19th century gault brick shaped wall with stone coping. The rear includes an early 19th century wing and additional structures, also in gault brick. Inside, the house features an early 19th century open-string main staircase with two flights and square section balusters, while the upper two flights are mid-18th century closed-string with turned balusters. There are early 19th century marble fireplace surrounds and cornice mouldings, as well as 18th century panelled doors on the first floor.
