Description
30 East Street is an early 16th-century building that may have originally served as a guildhall. It features four main bays, with additional bays added in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. A stone plaque on the south wall bears the initials 'IH' and the date '1769'. The building has two storeys with attics and is constructed of timber framing with rendered local brick and plain tile roofs.
The street-facing elevation includes two first-floor hung sash windows with glazing bars, and early 19th-century shop windows with original glazing bars flanking a central door that has a rectangular fanlight and a common architrave. The elevation facing the churchyard has a lower single-storey and attic range to the north, featuring two gabled dormer windows, along with replacement casement and hung sash windows. To the right of the centre is a late 18th-century panelled door with a flat canopy, alongside a small shop window with fixed lights set in a reeded architrave.
Inside, the timber-framed walls of the original building remain largely intact, although the moulded tie beams have been damaged due to later alterations. The four-bayed side purlin roof is notable for its fine construction, featuring ogee braced collars and windbraces in each bay.
