Description

The Talbot Public House is a late 17th century or early 18th century building that was altered around 1920. It is constructed of local brick, with some areas plastered and roughcast rendered. The building features hipped roofs covered with 20th century ridged tiles and has brick side stacks, along with a pantiled rear extension. It stands two storeys tall with attics.

Originally, the facade was symmetrical with slightly advanced bays on both the left and right sides, but modifications were made to the ground floor around 1935. There is a 20th century entrance to the left of centre, accompanied by two large casement windows with glazing bars on the right. These windows include two leaded-light stained glass designs depicting a jug and glass of ale, and a pipe with bread and cheese, which replaced the former hung sash windows. On the first floor, there are three recessed twelve-paned hung sash windows. A sawtoothed brick eaves cornice adds to the architectural detail.

The original layout featured an open ground floor between the wings, but this was altered in the 19th century by infilling the rear elevation. Evidence of these changes prior to 1935 can be found in a photograph held at the Historic Records Office. Additionally, part of the building served as a school in 1812.
