Description

The Parish Church of St Mary is located in Houghton and Wyton, primarily dating from the 14th century, with the chancel rebuilt in the 13th century and restored comprehensively in 1870-1871. The church is constructed of pebble-rubble with Barnack stone dressings and modern brick in the north aisle. It features roofs made of plain tiles and lead. The tower has three stages, an embattled parapet, and four moulded pinnacle shafts with caps. Clasping buttresses are present at the western angles of the first two stages. The belfry windows are trefoiled and two-light, with quatrefoils that project above the parapet in a gabled head. An ashlar spire is set on an octagonal base. The south-facing clerestory has four quatrefoil lights, and the south porch, dating from the 16th century, includes an outer archway with a four-centred arch and the year 1664 inscribed on the western jamb.

Inside, the church features a 13th-century two-centred chancel arch with two chamfered orders, located to the right of a stair turret that intrudes into the nave. There is a 13th-century double piscina with mask stops to the labels, shafted jambs, and a wooden shelf. A stone seat from the 13th century, originally longer with shaped arms and chamfered edges, is fixed to the north wall of the chancel. Additionally, there are two oak cupboards with 15th-century carved panels and notable 18th-century tombstones located to the north and east of the church, including a table-tomb dated 1774.
