Description

No. 40 on Hatchet Lane is a cottage featuring a medieval open hall that consists of two bays. It was extended in the early 17th century by adding one bay to the south-west and two bays to the north-east. The cottage has two storeys and is finished with roughcast render over a timber frame, topped with a pantile roof and a ridge stack. A modern closed porch has been added to the entrance. The building has four modern casement windows with leaded lights on both floors. Inside, the cottage showcases exposed timber framing, stop-chamfered ceiling beams, and an inglenook hearth. The roof of the medieval hall remains largely intact, with alternate pairs of rafters featuring collars.
