Description

This is a house, dated 1626 and extended in the early 19th century. It is constructed of red brick in English bond with a low-pitched slate roof. The original gable end retains kneelers made of cut and moulded brickwork, and the left-hand end stack features similar decorative brickwork. The front wall is thicker at ground floor level. The front has three casement windows at the first floor, which are 20th-century replacements. A stone with the date 1626 is set into the front wall. The central doorway has a 19th-century raised and fielded panelled door with two small glazed upper panels.

Inside, one ground floor room features ovolo moulded joists, with particularly fine carving to the soffits of two main beams. One beam is carved with stylised foliage and three mask heads depicting male and female faces, while the other shows grotesque heads and fantastic animals. Another room has 18th-century raised and fielded panelling to the dado and a late 18th-century fireplace surround decorated with a frieze of festoons and a pastoral scene depicting a shepherd, dog, and sheep. Original four-light ovolo mullion windows with iron saddle bars remain in the original rear wall of the 1626 section; one window has had two mullions removed. The staircase, from the early 19th-century extension, is of open-string design with turned newels, square section balusters, and scroll tread ends.
