Description
Nos. 4, 6, 8, and 10 on Newgate Street are a row of four houses dated 1778, although they may have earlier origins. The houses have 20th-century alterations and are constructed from gault brick with a gault pantile roof featuring coped gables and tumbled brickwork. There are brick ridge and end stacks. The buildings are single storey with an attic and present a five-window range of 20th-century windows set under cambered brick arches.
No. 4 has a six-panel door with glazed top-lights, while No. 6 features a 20th-century door and has a brick on the right jamb inscribed with "TR 1778." Nos. 8 and 10 also have 20th-century doors. Above, there are four Lincolnshire dormers and a dentilled eaves cornice. A long timber used as a tie is visible below the eaves of the two central houses. The left end has a 2/2 sash window. The rear of the houses includes additional Lincolnshire dormers and single-storey extensions. The interior has not been inspected. This row of houses, which has seen some alterations, retains characteristics of 18th-century architecture.
