Description
The March East Junction Signal Box is a 19th-century structure with a rectangular plan, situated to the east of the station. It is built from red brick and features a slate-clad roof. The signal box has one storey and a basement, and it stands taller than typical signal boxes. The shallow-pitched roof has overhanging eaves that are decorated, with exposed rafters and ornamental ridge tiles. The timber bargeboards are adorned with decorative edging, and the weather-boarding in the gable heads gives a rustic appearance. The building is set on a brick plinth and has pilasters at the corners. Access to the top-floor room is via an external flight of steps on the north side, leading to a partly-glazed 20th-century door. This level is surrounded on three sides by a continuous band of large uPVC windows, designed to mimic the original glazing pattern. A planked walkway with an iron handrail encircles the three glazed sides, supported by exposed joists. At the basement level, three windows on the south side, which originally had projecting lintels, have been blocked up.
Inside, the signal box contains a mechanical signal lever frame from 1897, featuring a series of hand-operated levers that extend the full length of the box. This original mechanism is still in working order, although it has been supplemented by 21st-century electronic equipment and track display screens.
