Description
The water tower, built in 1894 for the Wisbech Water Works Company, is constructed from common bricks, likely Flettons, with red brick dressings. It features a large square plan in a classical style, with a tall three-stage stepped base and three storeys above. The corners are accentuated by broad panelled pilasters, and each floor has a round-headed window set in a round-headed recess with imposts. The arches of the windows and recesses are made of red brick and have stone keystones. A large corbelled red brick cornice sits atop the structure, leading to a blind tank stage with similar pilasters, a smaller cornice, and a panelled blocking course at the top. The base includes a round arch doorway with a keyblock and a semi-circular fanlight featuring radiating bars, along with panelled double doors. The windows are fitted with cast-iron frames and margin glazing bars. Inside, the top stage houses a 100,000-gallon tank. The construction of this water tower was part of the 1884 Wisbech Water Order, which aimed to enhance the water supply for March and Chatteris.
