Description

The Church of St Paul is a parish church built in 1870 in the early English style. It is constructed of flint with stone dressings on the buttresses and around the window and door openings. The church features slate roofs that are parapetted, with a gabled bell-cote at the east end of the nave. The west wall has a quatrefoil above a window consisting of two pointed lights with a foiled head, flanked by two lancet windows. The south wall is divided into four bays by two-stage buttressing, with each bay containing one window of two pointed lights with a quatrefoil, except for the central bay which has a circular window. The south porch is gabled and has a two-centred outer archway that is hollow and roll moulded, with attached shafts leading to responds that have moulded capitals and bases.

Inside, the chancel's east wall features a quatrefoil above a window with three trefoil lights set in a two-centred arch. The pulpit is made of stone, octagonal on a stem with subsidiary shafts, and includes a gabled niche that contains a sculpture of Christ in the act of benediction. The chancel arch is two-centred and consists of two chamfered orders, with the inner arch supported by corbels. There is a similar arch leading to the vestry and an organ chamber off the chancel. The original tiled floor and stencilled wall decoration can be seen at the east end of the chancel, which includes a painted boarded roof.
