Description

The outbuilding to the east of Tower Farmhouse, formerly known as the gatehouse to the Bishop of Ely's Palace, was built for Bishop Alcock between 1486 and 1500. It is constructed of red brick featuring a deeper red brick diaper pattern. The plinth is coursed in English bond and includes a chamfered limestone band, with limestone dressings on the quoins and openings. The building has been reroofed with corrugated iron. Originally, it may have had several storeys, but its height has been reduced to two storeys, with some walls and door jambs of the rear wing demolished.

On the south elevation, there is a pedestrian entrance to the left of the center, accessed through a moulded four-centred arch that has a panelled overmantel and a superimposed crocketed ogee arch enclosing a cock, which is the rebus of Bishop Alcock. The windows feature round-headed lights with drip moulds and chamfered mullions, including two single-light windows and one three-light window to the right of the entrance, as well as a large five-light window that has been reduced in height at the first floor, along with two single-light windows to the right.

Inside, the original layout included an entrance hall with a guardroom and a doorway leading to a staircase from the cross passage, with an inner room to the right. The end room may have been tunnel vaulted, and the hall shows springings for two bays of fan vaulting. The room divisions are mirrored on the first floor. A lease from 1746 includes a covenant to repair the tower, which was said to have been the gatehouse, transforming it into a good farmhouse.
