Description
The Church of St Andrew the Great is a parish church located on the west side of St Andrew's Street. It was rebuilt in 1843 based on a design by Ambrose Poynter, showcasing a late Gothic style. The church retains some remnants of an earlier structure, including early 12th century double capitals found in the heating chamber. The nave consists of five bays with side aisles, and there is a west tower that features four stages. The church includes contemporary woodwork and a roof, with a south porch added in 1850 and vestries constructed in 1897. Inside, there are several 18th century mural monuments from the former church, including one dedicated to Captain Cook and his family.
