Description

The listing describes a pair of K6 telephone kiosks located on the west side of Sidney Street, Cambridge, approximately 35 metres south of its junction with Market Street, and adjacent to Holy Trinity Church (designated at Grade B). These kiosks are a standardised design constructed from cast iron and painted red, featuring long horizontal glazing in the doors and sides, with applied crowns on the top panels. They display rectangular white signs reading "TELEPHONE" beneath the shallow-curved roof and contain modernised internal equipment. Both kiosks are in generally fair repair and retain all their original glass panes.

The K6 kiosks were designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 for the General Post Office to commemorate King George V’s Silver Jubilee. They evolved from his earlier K2 design and were intended to be more streamlined, compact, and cost-effective to mass produce. Over 70,000 K6 kiosks were eventually manufactured, becoming an iconic feature of British streetscapes.

The kiosks have a notable visual relationship with other designated buildings, including the churchyard railings and numbers 1 and 2 Market Street, located approximately 55 metres north. They are designated at Grade II, partly due to this strong visual relationship and their contribution to the character of the area.
