Description

Downing College features the East and West Ranges, including the Hall, the Master's Lodge, and the East and West Lodges. Built between 1807 and 1821, with alterations from 1874 to 1876, the buildings were designed by William Wilkins and completed by E M Barry. The design includes a hexastyle Ionic portico facing the court and a tetrastyle portico facing south for both the Hall and the Master's Lodge at the southern end of each range. These structures are flanked to the north by detached blocks connected only by single-storey screen walls. The buildings are constructed of gault brick faced in Ketton stone, with two storeys and attics. Barry made changes to the Hall's interior and completed the northern ranges of chambers, as well as constructing behind the screen walls. Many original interior features remain, although the Hall was enlarged during modernization in 1968-1969.
