Description
Murray Edwards College, formerly known as New Hall, is a women's college built between 1962 and 1966 by the architectural firm Chamberlin, Powell and Bon. The college features white brick and concrete construction, with some polished and bush-hammered surfaces. It includes flat roofs, with the hall and library topped by concrete vaults. The layout consists of two linked courtyards; the larger one has residential accommodation on three sides, while the smaller courtyard contains the hall to the east and the library to the west. Most of the buildings are three storeys tall.
The hall has a Greek cross plan, with circular staircases at the corners and a dome made up of eight leaves that allows for indirect top-lighting. Inside, the hall features segmental arches supported by four pairs of slim columns, and the Junior Common Room (JCR) has a double-height space. The interiors are primarily made of brick and concrete. The library is rectangular with a barrel vault and groined segmental arched windows on the sides, topped with a heavy, simple cornice. It has a galleried interior. The hall and library are connected by double-height walkways, which also include some offices and meeting rooms behind them. The residential blocks display irregular fenestration, split-pitched roofs, and double-height rooms on the upper storey.
