Description
Zion Chapel Sunday School (Baptist) is a building dating from 1838, originally serving as a chapel but now used as a hall. It is constructed of grey gault brick and has two storeys and a basement, topped with a low pitched hipped slate roof. The building underwent alterations in 1879 when the current chapel was built, making the side elevation facing Petersfield particularly significant. This elevation features four shallow arcaded bays with semi-elliptical heads, each containing sash windows with glazing bars on both floors. There are stringcourses between the floors, and a panelled door was inserted in 1879 along with the cornice. Inside, the upper floor is supported by cast-iron fluted columns with foliated capitals, which were originally intended to carry galleries. The chapel was founded by Henry Battiscombe, an important dissenting minister. The building forms a group with Nos 1 to 10 (consecutive) Petersfield.
