Description
St John's College, New Court, was built between 1826 and 1831, designed by architects T. Rickman and Hutchinson. It consists of a three-sided court formed by tall Gothic Revival buildings, with the fourth side featuring an open cloister and gateway. The design reflects the romantic style of the period. The buildings are constructed of white brick with stone facing and slate roofs, featuring four-storey blocks that are battlemented and topped with pinnacles. The Gatehall includes a fan vault with a large octagonal pendant. The cloister-walk has seven bays on each side of the gatehouse. The interior preserves many original features, including ribbed plaster ceilings of Gothic type.
