Description
Numbers 1 to 11, 11A and 12 (the Argyle Hotel) form a terrace of yellow stock brick houses built around 1860 by Brassey of Sir Morton Pete Brassey Lucas and Co., the firm also responsible for the Southend Railway. Numbers 1 and 3 have been plastered, and Number 4 is painted. The terrace, along with Clifton Terrace and Royal Terrace, represents some of the only surviving examples of the original appearance of Prittlewell’s south end. Each house is two storeys high with a single window range and a two-storey canted bay topped with ornamental cast iron railings, creating 12 bays in total. Raised brick bands define the levels and separate the bays. The windows are generally double-hung sashes with single vertical glazing bars in rusticated brick surrounds, which are painted. Doorways are approached via flights of steps and have raised brick surrounds and moulded brick cornices. The roofs are slate, with a hipped form at the east end. Number 5 includes a 20th-century tiled attic storey built above the bay, and Number 12 has a similarly dated slate-roofed attic storey. Originally, the rear of the terrace was designed to overlook Alexander Street, but later development built up the street frontage. Twelve-storeyed wings project at the north, some featuring pediments. While some houses have undergone 19th and 20th century alterations and additions, many retain their original features. The rear roadway, which was once a mews to the terrace, is surfaced with vitreous tiles bordered by granite paving. Numbers 1 to 11 (consec), 11A and Number 12 (the Argyle Hotel) are grouped with Numbers 1 to 6 (consec), Clifton Terrace.
