Description
The Central Museum, formerly known as The Public Library, is a former public library built in 1905, designed by H T Hare, with a contribution of £8,000 from Andrew Carnegie. This red brick building features stone dressings and a stone plinth, and it stands two storeys tall. The west front has gabled wings at both the north and south ends, while the central section is adorned with stone Ionic pilasters. The window arrangement consists of a 1:3:1 pattern. The upper storey of the central part is made of panelled stone, and each window's central mullion is designed as a moulded baluster. Stone swags are placed under each window sill. The windows in the wings are three-light, featuring Roman Doric engaged columns and segmental open pediments on the first storey, with pilasters on the ground storey. The central doorway is framed by Roman Doric engaged columns and an open segmental pediment. The south front has two slightly projected bays, designed similarly to the wings on the west front, and a three-window range in the centre. A central porch projects on the ground storey, featuring an open segmental pediment and pilasters. The roof is slate, with a stone modillion eaves cornice and a central glazed cupola on the west front.
