Description
This is a terrace of shops and houses built between 1800 and 1830. It's located on Nelson Street, which historically served as the shopping area of Southend-on-Sea before the High Street was developed. The terrace, numbers 1 to 15, is constructed of yellow brick and sits on a raised pavement of stone flags. It consists of eight three-storey gabled blocks interspersed with two two-storey blocks, all connected together. The three-storey blocks each have a single three-light window on the first floor and a window within the gable. The two-storey blocks each have a single window range. The windows are double-hung sash windows with single vertical glazing bars, and the centre lights of the first-floor windows are casements. The ground floors have been altered to accommodate 20th-century shops and offices, with ornamental cast iron railings above the shop fascias. Pilasters are present on the shop fronts of numbers 1 to 7. The roofs are slate, with overhanging eaves supported by brackets. Numbers 1 to 15 form a group with numbers 2 to 18 (even) and number 10A.
