Description
Kingsley House, formerly known as The Rectory, is an early 16th century house that was extended in 1880. The 16th century cross wing is located to the north and is constructed of coursed stone rubble with a new tile roof featuring gabled ends. The end wall includes a 19th century gothic oriel window. The 16th century link wing has been demolished, leaving only its east front wall, which stands two storeys high and consists of three bays with stone mullion windows and buttresses that have set-offs.
To the south, the main house was built in 1880 in an early 16th century style, made of coursed stone with freestone dressings. It has an asymmetrical L-shaped plan and is two storeys tall, featuring parapets with moulded coping and string courses. The east front has a projecting two-storey porch that is off centre, with an oriel topped with battlements and a moulded two-centred arch doorway below. To the left is a gable, while the right side of the ground floor has two and three-light windows adorned with gothic tracery. The south front features a canted bay to the right, a pointed arch stair window at the centre, and a gable to the left with a corbelled chimney stack; all chimney stacks are crenellated.
Historically, the house served as a rectory during the time of Rigus Fletcher, who was chaplain to Mary Queen of Scots and rector from 1586 to 1590. Charles Kingsley's father was rector here in the early 19th century, and Charles Kingsley himself was five years old when he arrived in 1824. His younger brothers, George and Henry, were born here in 1827 and 1830, respectively.
