Description

The Barnack War Memorial, made of Clipsham stone and bronze, features a stepped square base plinth topped with an octagonal cross that has a tapered shaft. The main inscription reads: "TO THE GLORY/ OF GOD AND IN/ MEMORY OF/ THE BARNACK/ MEN WHO FELL/ IN THE GREAT/ WAR 1914-1919/ JESU MERCY/ (NAMES)/ 1939-1945/ (NAMES)/ THIS CROSS WAS ERECTED BY ALFRED WEBSTER."

Alfred Webster, who lived in Barnack before moving to South Africa in the early 1900s, donated the memorial, which was dedicated by the Archdeacon of Oakham on 6th February 1921. The memorial is a poignant reminder of significant national and international events and serves as a simple yet architecturally distinct tribute to those who fell in the two world wars and the Falklands conflict.
