Description
The Former Chapel Langley School is a large and impressive Board School built in 1880, located at the corner of Russell Street. It is constructed of Luton grey brick with lighter red brick dressings and features a Welsh slate roof. The long elevation facing Russell Street has a central break in the building line. The left block has a central projecting gable with an additional gable to its right, while the right block mirrors this with a central projecting gable and further gables on either side. The building forms an L-shape with an apsidal wing facing Chapel Street. The rear wing also has an apsidal projection, and the rear elevation of the main block includes two projecting gabled wings and one apsidal wing. Throughout the building, there are moulded brick eaves with a frieze of lozenges. The windows are pointed arched sashes with red brick heads and stone drip moulds. The gable ends feature compositions of three or four windows, with a roundel above each set. The roundel is set within a red brick and stone arch, and the tympanum is decorated with a moulded terracotta scallop pattern.
