Description
The central block of St Mary's Hospital, formerly a Union Workhouse, was built around 1834. It is constructed from Luton grey bricks and topped with Welsh slate roofs. The section facing Dunstable Road features a central two-storey block with a hipped roof and deep eaves. On the first floor, there are four sash windows with glazing bars, each set under gauged brick heads with keystones. The central feature is a semi-circular arched dummy window with in-and-out quoins. The ground floor mirrors this arrangement with a central doorway. Flanking the central block are two lower rectangular wings; the left wing has three windows per floor, while the right wing has two, all adorned with stucco heads. At the rear, there is a long projecting wing that includes a central hexagonal block.
