Description

Bury Park United Reformed Church was built between 1895 and 1903 by G. Baines in a neo-decorated and perpendicular style. It is located on a corner site and features fine light red brick with stone dressings and slate roofs. The schoolroom to the east was constructed first, followed by the cruciform church. The church has a cambered tower on the corner, topped with a short spire and weathervane, and is supported by short diagonal angle buttresses. It has a moulded parapet and plain corner turrets, along with a cornice band adorned with rosettes and gargoyles on the buttresses. Each face of the tower has a four-light louvred window, and there are lancet windows with plain stone bands, as well as a door on the west side.

The west front features a large gable with a decorated apex above a prominent seven-light window. There is a single-storey porch with a half hexagonal plan, gabled over the main door, and flanked by four buttresses with empty niches. A small turret to the south mirrors the main tower. The north elevation also has a large gabled window, with two two-light square-headed windows beneath it, flanked by two small turrets. A single-storey link connects to the schoolroom at the east, which has three lancet windows in a coped gable above the porch entrance.

Inside, the church has four large pointed arches that spring from foliated capitals on square marble columns, and a ribbed ceiling. The pews are arranged in a semi-circular layout. The panelling behind the organ features the same ogee motif that is used extensively in the window tracery, and there is some plain Art Nouveau style glass.
