Description
Barclays Bank, located at Market Square in Leighton Buzzard, was built in 1866 by Alfred Waterhouse in the Gothic style. The building is constructed of Bath stone and features a Welsh slated roof with three dormer windows. It has two storeys and attics. The ground floor showcases five large cusped pointed arches, with a central doorway flanked by windows. These arches are supported by moulded responds and colonnettes with stiff leaf capitals. On the first floor, there are five pairs of rectangular windows, with colonnettes dividing each pair. The eaves cornice is supported by brackets and is decorated with leaf carving. The building also has stone chimney stacks. It was originally built for the local bank, Basset & Co. Barclays Bank is part of a group with Nos 2 to 6 (even) and No 50 High Street.
