Description

The Parish Church of St John the Evangelist was built between 1860 and 1861 by architect William Slater as a memorial for the widow of the Rev Edward Henry Dawkins of Mogerhanger House. The church is constructed from coursed limestone rubble with bands of ironstone and features ashlar dressings. It has clay tile roofs without coping or parapets.

The building is designed in an Early English style and includes a nave, north and south aisles, a north vestry, a chancel tower, a polygonal apse, and a stair turret at the northeast corner of the tower. Most windows are uncusped trefoiled lights, and most doors are pointed arched. The openings feature alternating voussoirs of ironstone and limestone. The nave has three-bay arcades on both sides, with foliate capitals and polychrome banding on the pointed arches.

The west elevation has a central door with three windows above, flanked by a single light in each aisle. The south aisle features three paired windows and a south door, while the north aisle, which extends to form the vestry, has four paired windows and a vestry door. The tower includes lights on each side of the bell-stage, a single light and door on the south elevation of the bottom stage, and a pyramidal roof. The apse has a single light on each of its five sides, and the stair turret is polygonal with a Caernarvon arched doorway, lit by several small single lights.

Inside, there is an ornate circular font supported by five pillars, featuring a carved scene of Christ receiving children. Most memorials within the church are represented in stained glass, dedicated to various members of the Dawkins and Thornton families.
