Description

The Old Vicarage is a former vicarage dating from 1860 to 1861, likely designed by William Slater for the widow of the Reverend Edward Henry Dawkins of Mogerhanger House. Constructed from coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, it has hipped clay tile roofs. The building follows a double pile plan with some projecting bays.

The front elevation is asymmetrical. The main block has two sash windows on the ground floor and four on the first floor, all with glazing bars and roll mouldings to their surrounds. An off-centre double door, partly glazed, is set under a hipped tiled open porch supported by turned wood columns on a stone plinth. A substantial two-stage chimney stack projects from the right-hand side, with a stone ridge stack that was lowered in the 20th century. A recessed block to the left has similar sash windows, two to each floor, but with chamfered surrounds instead of roll mouldings. A door with a rectangular fanlight is located on the left-hand side. A coved stone cornice runs throughout the building, complemented by polychrome tile and stone string courses.

The rear elevation has similar window arrangements, with a rectangular projecting bay on the left-hand side featuring a hipped slate roof. A single-storey service block to the north now has a 20th-century flat roof. The building is included on the list for its group value with the nearby church.
