Description
Battle Cottage, also known as The Ovens, is a pair of houses located on High Street in Blunham. They date from the late 17th century and the 19th century, with a plaque indicating the year 1699. The buildings are timber framed, with some exposed timber on No. 2, while parts of No. 2 have been rebuilt in brick. The entire structure is finished with colourwashed roughcast render. No. 2 has a clay tile roof, while the rest of the block features a thatched roof. Originally, the buildings had a three-room plan and are one storey high with attics, with the right-hand part of No. 2 having been converted from an outbuilding.
On the ground floor, there are two doors leading to the main block, both featuring moulded surrounds and pediments. No. 2 has a four-panel door, while No. 4 has a three-panel door with glazed upper sections. The building includes three three-light casement windows with leaded lights, one of which is located in the right-hand block under a cambered head. There are five dormers in total, with the central one on the main block and two on the right-hand side being 20th-century insertions, all fitted with 20th-century two-light casements.
