Description
The Thornton Mausoleum, located south of the Parish Church of St Edmund or St James, was built between 1805 and 1806 by Stephen Thornton in memory of his father, Godfrey Thornton, who died in 1805. This small, low building has a square plan and is constructed of brick with a colourwashed rendered exterior, topped by a hipped slate roof.
On the south elevation, there is a four-centred arch entrance featuring a moulded dripstone with lion head stops. Above the entrance, a circular plaque displays a moulded design of the Thornton arms. The other elevations each have a small circular window with deep cut mouldings and various tracery designs.
