Description
Pegsdon Barns is a house that dates back to the 16th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. Originally, it was timber framed, and some of the close-studding is still visible on the east elevation, with brick infill. Large sections have been recased or rebuilt in 18th-century red brick, featuring some flared bricks, while there are late 19th-century extensions in yellow brick. The roofs are covered with clay tiles.
The building has an H-plan layout, with a central block that is one storey high with attics, and cross-wings that are two storeys tall. Both cross-wings were extended northwards in the late 19th century. On the south elevation, the ground floor features three 19th-century canted bay windows with yellow brick plinths and hipped roofs. The central block has a gabled dormer with a three-light window, and each cross-wing has a three-light window on the first floor. Most windows have leaded casements, with some dating from the 20th century.
At the junction of the main block and the right-hand cross-wing, there is a plank door with sidelights, sheltered by a gabled open porch. The central block has multiple ridge stacks located off-centre, while each cross-wing also features multiple ridge stacks. The right-hand cross-wing has two additional external stacks on its side wall.
