Description
The Villagers Pump, located at the junction of Village Street with Barton Road in Hexton, is a village pump that includes an integral signpost (currently disused) and features added lamp and direction indicating arms. A plate affixed above the spout reads, "ERECTED/APRIL 1846/BY CAROLINE YOUNG/DE LAUTOUR/FOR THE USE OF/HEXTON/VILLAGERS." Another plate below the spout states, "FREEMAN ROE/ENGINEERS/70 STRAND/LONDON." The structure has a hexagonal platform with a post at each corner, likely dating from around 1908, which was reopened for use in 1934 but is now disused. The pump and corner posts are made of cast iron and painted white, while the handle is wrought iron. The platform features blue brick bull-nosed edging and steps on the north side. The tall octagonal Gothick iron pump has an octagonal base-plate, a high moulded base, a moulded octagonal shaft, and a tapered octagonal finial that supports a small four-armed cross-shaped signpost with a 20th-century street lantern fixed centrally on top. The overall height of the pump is about 3 meters. Direction arms are attached by straps at the finial level. The pump has panelled sides with trefoil heads, and on the east face, there is a large single spout with two rings and a bucket spur. The long S-shaped iron handle on the north face features an openwork thistle finial.
