Description
The pump, located on the roadside outside No. 4 New Cottages in Hexton, was erected around 1908 for G.H. Hodgson, the lord of the manor, during the culverting of the nearby stream. It remained in use until the 1940s. This cast iron pump stands approximately 1.5 meters high and features a cylindrical shaft adorned with raised rings. The shaft leads to a wider cylindrical fluted barrel with a large spurred spout facing west. On the south side, there is a long S-shaped cast iron handle, and the pump is topped with a fluted domed cap that has a finial. Originally, a pump was provided for each pair of cottages, and several of these pumps still exist.
