Description
The entrance gates at Pegsdon Lodge, located at the eastern entrance to Hexton Manor in the parish of Hexton, Hertfordshire, date from the early to mid-19th century. Made of cast iron, the gates stand approximately 3 metres high and span about 6 metres in width. They feature four rectangular openwork piers that support double gates in the center, with approximately one metre of slightly curving screen on either side. The piers are decorated with palmette and medallion panels and topped with urn finials. The gates and screens have plain vertical elements interrupted by decorative bands, including an arrowhead dograil at the base, anthemions in the middle, and geometric patterns above. Ornamental arrowhead finials line the top of the gates, which curve upwards to suggest a central crest. The left-hand screen actually serves as a disguised pedestrian gateway.
