Description
The Old Sugar Loaf Inn, located at No. 46 High Street North, dates from around 1717, as indicated by the rainwater heads. The building is slightly altered and constructed from brown-red brick with red quoins and dressings. It features a Welsh slate roof adorned with a carefully carved wooden modillion cornice. The inn stands five storeys tall and has eight double-hung sash windows with flat arches; the lower halves of the windows do not have glazing bars. There are bands on the first floor, and an early 19th-century Roman Doric porch extends over the pavement. The inn occupies a prominent site and is part of a group that includes Nos 36A and 36 to 48 (even).
