Description
The Western Lodge of the pair known as Brabury Lodges is an entrance lodge and adjoining screen wall located on the northeast side of Wrest Park. It was built in 1816 by Thomas Philip, the 2nd Earl de Grey. The lodge is constructed of yellow brick and has a square-based domed roof, from which the lead has been removed, exposing the timber structure beneath. The building has a small square plan, is one storey high with attics, and features rusticated quoins, a moulded band at the first floor level, and a moulded eaves cornice that is now partially collapsed.
Each side of the lodge has a slightly projecting central panel, which includes a small segmental-headed window in the attic and a ground floor opening with heavy keystones, the central one made of ashlar. The ground floor openings consist of part-glazed double doors on the east elevation and casement windows with glazing bars on the other sides. Originally, each elevation was topped with a small pediment, but only the one on the east elevation remains. There is an integral brick stack on the west elevation. Additionally, the remains of a screen wall extend westward from the southwest corner of the lodge, which is plain except for slightly projecting piers and a central doorway.
