Description

Le Petit Trianon, also known as The Wendy House, is a Grade II listed building constructed using split logs on a timber frame, raised on a low brick wall with a tiled roof and brick stack. The building has a linear plan with a central entrance on the front elevation.

This single-storey log structure features a tall, square gable stack with a hexagonal shaft and moulded cap. The tripartite design includes a central gable entrance adorned with decorative split log work that creates geometric patterns on the door and above it, echoing the diamond leaded lights of the casement windows. There are double casement windows in each end bay and a single casement window on either side of the central door, all of which appear to retain their original window furniture. The rear elevation is simpler, with a single off-centre entrance and no window openings. The gable ends are modestly detailed with decorative split log work and plain carved bargeboards.

Inside, the building contains three rooms that were described in 1885 as a kitchen, scullery, and sitting room. Although a workshop with a sundial that told the time worldwide is mentioned in historical records, there is no evidence of this either inside or outside the structure. The walls are lined with plain tongue and groove panelling, and the floors are tiled throughout. A simple fireplace with a brick surround and basket grate is present in the room to the right of the front door, and a panelled wall cupboard with L-shaped hinges is located directly opposite the door.
