Description

This building is the former main block of St Andrew’s Voluntary Controlled Junior School, along with two classroom blocks, dating from 1875. Plans were drawn up in 1874 by Thomas Elworthy of Hastings. The building is constructed of gault brick with red brick dressings. It is a long, low one-story block divided into two symmetrical sections for boys and girls by a central bell turret. Each section features two forward projecting gables. The roof is slate and has terracotta ridge tiles and original louvres. The gable coping is surmounted by small crosses. The projecting gable ends have tall, fine three-light windows, with a pointed arch and geometric glazing in the central light. Other windows have shallow arched heads and glazing bars. Attached classroom blocks of the same date and style flank the main block to the north and south.
