Description

This is a farmhouse dating to the late 16th or 17th century, with renovations carried out in the 1730s, evidenced by a datestone on the front gable. It was later altered and extended by Sir Albert Richardson. The farmhouse is constructed of coursed limestone rubble, and has an old clay tile roof. Originally designed with an L-shaped plan, it comprises a main wing running parallel to the road, featuring a tall, narrow brick stack designed to serve a back-to-back hearth, and a gable-ended wing added towards the road at the northeast end. Richardson’s later work included extending the northeast wing, creating an elevated first-floor balcony entrance with a staircase on the southwest front, and adding a large, square, flat-roofed bay. Most windows have been modernized and are now two and three-light casements. Some windows on the garden front retain mullions and transoms, with leaded lights. There are three hipped dormers in the roof.
