Description
The Old Rectory is a house that was formerly a rectory, built in the late 18th century, likely as a rebuilding of an earlier structure for the Martyn family. The rainwater heads indicate a date of 1799. It is constructed of red brick and features a hipped tiled roof behind a parapet. The building is a three-storey rectangular block with later, lower additions at the rear.
The front elevation is symmetrical, with a slightly projecting central bay that has a cyma reversa stone pediment. There is a stone cornice band and coping at the parapet. The windows are arranged in a 1:3:1 pattern, featuring sash windows with glazing bars set under flat arches. The central doorway includes a semi-circular traceried fanlight, a panelled archivolt, and a wooden surround with panelled pilasters that support entablatures and an open dentil pediment. The flanking windows are set in shallow round-headed recesses, with stone impost bands that align with the doorway cornice. The side elevations each have three windows, some of which are dummy.
To the west, there is a 19th-century two-storey addition built of chequered brick with a slate roof. To the east, there are 20th-century additions designed by Sir Albert Richardson. Inside, the rectory features a well staircase with a circular domed skylight and cut spandrels. The interior also includes panelled reveals, doors, and shutters, along with cornices that have modillion and foliate designs, and white marble chimney pieces.
